Renting in Qatar: what to know

Some basics for tenants and landlords. Leases in Qatar are governed by Law No. 4 of 2008 on property leasing, amended several times, most recently by Law No. 8 of 2026.
The lease
- Put everything in writing: the rent, when and how it is paid, the length, renewal and notice, and who pays for maintenance, electricity and water.
- Leases are registered with the Ministry of Municipality, usually by the landlord. Ask for a copy: Kahramaa and other services ask for the registered lease.
Deposit and payments
- Agree in writing on any deposit: the amount, when it comes back and what may be kept for damage.
- Keep a receipt for every payment. If you pay by cheque, note each cheque's number, date and amount.
Renewing or leaving
- Check the notice your lease asks for before you renew or leave, and give it in writing.
Disputes
- Disputes between landlords and tenants go to the Rental Disputes Settlement Committee. Since September 2026, a court hears such a dispute only after the committee.
This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change: check the current law with the Ministry of Municipality or a lawyer.
